The Best Time to Visit Pakistan, Month by Month
Pakistan is two countries weather-wise: the north and everywhere else. Here is what each month is actually for, by region.

The best time to visit Pakistan depends almost entirely on which Pakistan you want. The northern valleys, Hunza, Skardu, Chitral, Naran, are best between April and October. The southern cultural belt, Lahore, Karachi, Multan, is best November through March, when temperatures drop out of the punishing summer range. Try to do both in one trip and you're trading. Here is how we plan it.
Two climates, one country
Northern Pakistan is high alpine, Hunza at 2,500 m, Skardu at 2,230 m, Khunjerab Pass at 4,733 m. Winters are long, snowy, and close most passes. Southern Pakistan is Indo-Gangetic plain, Lahore and Multan sit at 200-300 m and run 45 °C in June. The two best windows for the north (May-June and September-October) are the same windows the south is still bearable. That is the planning opportunity.
Pakistan month by month
| Month | North | South / Cultural |
|---|---|---|
| January | Closed except dedicated winter trips. Hunza snowed-in, Khunjerab shut. | Excellent, cool, dry, sharp light in Lahore. |
| February | Still winter. Skiing in Malam Jabba. | Best month for southern Pakistan culture trips. |
| March | Roads start reopening late month. Lower north accessible. | Warm, beautiful. Last comfortable Lahore weeks. |
| April | Cherry blossom in Hunza (early to mid). Magical and quiet. | Heat building. Lahore still workable early month. |
| May | All passes opening. Crystalline weather. Green valleys. | Hot. South difficult except early morning. |
| June | Peak summer in the north, long days, full access, Deosai opens late month. | Brutal heat in south. Avoid. |
| July | Domestic peak. Hot in Skardu town. Monsoon edges into KP, landslide risk on KKH. | Monsoon plains. Avoid. |
| August | Same as July, Deosai at peak wildflower. | Monsoon. Avoid. |
| September | Best month overall: clear skies, autumn beginning, crowds gone. | Heat receding. Tolerable late month. |
| October | Autumn colour peaks (mid-Oct in Hunza, late Oct in Khaplu). Our favourite. | Excellent, coolish, dry, perfect light. |
| November | Khunjerab closes early month. Lower valleys still open and quiet. | Beautiful. Lahore in its best dress. |
| December | Winter. Skiing, Kalash winter festival Chowmas. | Cold, dry, perfect for the south. |
Best month by trip type
- First-time north trip: late September to mid-October.
- Cherry blossom: 1-15 April in Hunza; 10-25 April in Skardu/Shigar.
- K2 base camp trek: mid-June to mid-August.
- Deosai: 1 July to 15 September.
- Khunjerab Pass: May to early November.
- Lahore food and heritage: November to February.
- Kalash festivals: Joshi (mid-May), Uchal (August), Chowmas (December).
Months to avoid (and why)
December-February for the north unless you specifically want winter and accept that 40% of the highlights are closed. June-August for the southern plains unless you have no choice. The shoulder weeks at the very ends of these windows (early March in the north, late November in the south) are negotiable and often beautiful, talk to us about specifics.
Q. What is the single best month to visit Pakistan?
October. The north still has every pass open through the first week of November, autumn colour is at its peak from mid-October, Lahore and Islamabad are dry and comfortable, and the domestic summer crowds have gone. If you can only pick one month, pick October.
Q. When is the cherry blossom in Hunza?
Early to mid-April in lower Hunza (Aliabad, Karimabad). The bloom moves up-valley over about ten days. By the last week of April it has typically reached Gulmit and Passu. Skardu and Shigar bloom a week or two later.
Q. Is it safe to visit Pakistan during Ramadan?
Yes, and culturally rich. Restaurants in tourist areas stay open; sehri and iftar in Lahore are a highlight in themselves. Pace adjusts, alcohol is harder to find, and some sites have shorter hours.
Q. Can I combine the north and Lahore?
Yes, in April or October. Outside those two windows you are sacrificing one side of the country to the weather.
Q. When does the Karakoram Highway close?
The KKH itself stays open year-round to Hunza. The Khunjerab Pass section closes roughly late November to early May. Babusar Pass (Naran route) closes mid-October to mid-July.
