Trekking Around Nanga Parbat: Three Routes Worth Doing
Nanga Parbat is the ninth-highest mountain on earth and one of the most photographed faces in the Karakoram. Three trekking routes, three completely different experiences.

Nanga Parbat (8,126 m) is the western anchor of the Himalaya and stands alone, no neighbouring eight-thousanders, just a single massive mountain rising out of the Indus gorge. For nanga parbat trekking there are three routes worth running and we suggest different ones depending on time and fitness.
Three routes
| Route | Days | Difficulty | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fairy Meadows + BC | 4-5 | Moderate | First-timers, families |
| Rupal face base | 6-7 | Moderate-plus | Photographers, scale-seekers |
| Mazeno Pass | 12-14 | Hard | Experienced trekkers |
Fairy Meadows and Nanga Parbat base camp
The classic. Jeep to Tato, walk three hours through pine forest to Fairy Meadows (3,300 m), spend two nights, day-walk to Nanga Parbat base camp (3,900 m). Detailed in our Fairy Meadows guide. The face from this side is the Diamir face, fluted, white, immense.
Rupal face base camp
Less visited and arguably more dramatic. Drive from Astore to Tarashing in the Rupal valley. Two-day walk to Latabo base camp at 3,650 m, beneath the Rupal face, at 4,600 m of vertical relief, the largest mountain face on earth. Quieter than Fairy Meadows; no permanent camp settlement; we run it as a 6-7 day round trip from Gilgit.
The Mazeno Pass
The serious one. Crosses the Mazeno La (5,400 m) from the Rupal valley to the Diamir side, circumnavigating the entire mountain. 12-14 days on trail, full camp logistics, high glaciated pass. Reserved for experienced trekkers with recent altitude exposure.
Q. Which route should we choose?
Fairy Meadows for first-time trekkers and families. Rupal if you've already done Fairy Meadows or want the bigger face. Mazeno if you have Concordia or similar already on your resume.
Q. When is the best time?
June through September for all three. The Mazeno specifically needs late July to mid-September for the pass to be safely crossable.
Q. How do these compare to K2 base camp?
Shorter, lower, more accessible. Fairy Meadows is doable on a 10-day Pakistan trip; K2 BC needs three weeks.
