If you have the time, this is the trip to do. Sixteen days that begin in old Lahore and end on the Chinese border at 4,693 m. The pacing is deliberately slow, three nights in Lahore, two in Skardu/Shigar, three in Hunza, so that nowhere feels rushed. Itinerary
Day by day
Day 1 to 3
Lahore
Three nights inside the walled city: Lahore Fort, Badshahi Mosque, Wazir Khan, Shalimar Gardens, food walks and qawwali. (Detailed daily plan as per the Heritage Triangle itinerary.)
Day 4
Drive to Islamabad via Rohtas
Stop at Rohtas Fort (UNESCO) on the GT Road. Overnight at Serena Islamabad.
Day 5
Taxila day · fly to Skardu next morning prep
Morning at Taxila with a Gandharan specialist. Afternoon at leisure. Early night for the flight.
Day 6 to 8
Skardu & Shigar
Fly to Skardu. Two nights at Serena Shigar Fort, one night in Skardu. Deosai Plateau day-excursion (summer) or Katpana cold desert (winter).
Day 9
Drive Skardu to Karimabad (Hunza)
8-hour spectacular drive over the Indus, joining the KKH at Jaglot. Sunset on Rakaposhi from the Karimabad terrace.
Day 10 to 11
Central Hunza
Baltit and Altit Forts with a heritage guide, Hopper glacier, Duikar sunrise, evening in Karimabad bazaar.
Day 12 to 13
Upper Hunza & Khunjerab
Move up to Gulmit. Attabad Lake by boat, Passu Cones, Hussaini Bridge. Full day to Khunjerab Pass at 4,693 m.
Day 14
Gulmit to Gilgit
Slow drive back down with stops at Ganish village (UNESCO) and the Rakaposhi viewpoint at Ghulmet.
Day 15
Fly Gilgit to Islamabad
Morning flight back. Afternoon at the Margalla Hills viewpoint. Farewell dinner at Andaaz, Saidpur Village.
Day 16
Departure
Transfer to Islamabad International.
