Hunza in 7 Days: A Slow, Honest Itinerary

Seven days is enough to do Hunza properly without the back-of-the-jeep blur. This is the itinerary we run for travellers who want one valley, done well.

Seven days in Hunza is the version we recommend when a traveller has the time and wants to actually see the valley rather than tick it. You sleep three nights in Karimabad, one in upper Hunza, and have two flex days for weather, altitude or a side valley. This hunza 7 day itinerary is the one we run most often outside the 10-day grand loop.

The shape

Fly Islamabad to Gilgit on day one when the weather cooperates, road as backup. Drive up the Karakoram Highway to Karimabad. Three nights central Hunza, one or two nights upper Hunza around Gulmit or Passu, then back to Gilgit and fly out. No double-backs, no transit days that aren't earning their keep.

Day by day

Day 1, Islamabad to Hunza

Morning PIA flight to Gilgit (1 hour, weather-dependent). Private transfer up the KKH to Karimabad, around 2.5 hours with a Rakaposhi viewpoint stop. Sunset from Eagle's Nest. Overnight Hunza Serena or Luxus.

Day 2, Karimabad and Baltit Fort

Guided morning at Baltit Fort, walk down through Karimabad bazaar, lunch at Café de Hunza. Afternoon at Altit Fort and Ganish heritage village. The day is intentionally light to let the altitude settle.

Day 3, Hopper Glacier

Drive across the Hunza river to Nagar and up to Hopper (1.5 hours). Walk to the glacier viewpoint, lunch at a local home we work with, return Karimabad evening. Less famous than Passu and we like it more.

Day 4, Upper Hunza: Attabad and Passu

Move up to Gulmit or Passu. Attabad Lake boat, lunch at Luxus Attabad, afternoon at the Passu Cathedral viewpoint and the suspension bridge. Overnight upper Hunza.

Day 5, Khunjerab Pass

May to October only. Drive to Khunjerab (4,733 m, Chinese border), back via Sost. Long day, the big visual of the trip. Off-season we swap in Borith Lake and the Passu glacier walk.

Day 6, Back to central Hunza or Naltar

Two choices. Slow option: return to Karimabad for a final evening, Duikar sunset, last dinner at the Serena. Active option: drop down to Gilgit and detour to Naltar Valley for the pine forests and lakes.

Day 7, Hunza to Islamabad

Transfer to Gilgit airport, morning flight to Islamabad. Connect onwards or overnight.

Logistics

  • Best months: April (blossom), June-August, late September-October (autumn colour).
  • Altitude: Karimabad 2,500 m, Khunjerab 4,733 m. The day-2 rest day matters.
  • Transport: one private vehicle + driver for the full week.
  • Hotels: Hunza Serena, Luxus Hunza, Eagle's Nest, Luxus Attabad, Passu Tourist Lodge.

Variants we run

Photographer's edit swaps the Khunjerab day for a second upper-Hunza dawn. Family edit adds an extra Karimabad day and skips Hopper. Honeymoon edit puts both upper-Hunza nights at Luxus Attabad on the lake.

Q. Is 7 days enough for Hunza?

Yes, three nights Karimabad, two upper Hunza, two transit days. You see the headline sights and one quiet side valley without rushing.

Q. Do we need to acclimatise?

Karimabad is 2,500 m. Most travellers feel fine. Khunjerab at 4,733 m is a day trip so exposure is short. Hydrate and don't drink the night before.

Q. Can this be combined with Skardu?

Not in seven days without it becoming a transit trip. Add three days minimum for a meaningful Skardu extension, or run the 10-day itinerary instead.
