Swat & Kalam
Pine-forested river valleys once called the Switzerland of the East.
When to go
April to October
Swat is gentle country after the Karakoram, a cool, green valley of deodar forest, apple orchards and a glacial river that runs the colour of pale jade. The upper reaches at Kalam and Mahodand have the best summer light in the country.
We pair the alpine half of the valley with the archaeological side: Butkara, Saidu Sharif's museum and the rock-cut Buddhas of Jahanabad, accompanied by an archaeologist trained at Ca' Foscari.
