Upper Hunza
Shimshal
Pakistan's village of mountaineers, at the end of the road.
When to go
June to September
Until 2003 there was no road to Shimshal, only a three-day walk along the gorge. Today the track is open but the village remains gloriously remote: stone houses, terraced barley fields, and a school whose graduates routinely summit eight-thousanders.
We stay in a family-run guesthouse run by the wife of a Shimshali climber. Day walks lead to the Mingligh viewpoint, the Pamir pastures, or simply the chai-house by the river.
