Chitral
Kalash Valleys
A pre-Islamic culture surviving in three narrow valleys.
When to go
May to October (festivals: Chilam Joshi in May)
Reached only by a long, slow drive over the Lowari pass, the Kalash valleys remain one of South Asia's most singular cultures, a polytheistic people whose festivals mark the turning of the year in song, dance, and walnut wine.
We visit with the deepest possible care: small groups, local hosts, no cameras unless invited. The reward is rare: an evening in a wooden house where the fire is the only light.
